Ut Bach Lan


Út Bạch Lan 
(1935-2016) was born in Long An, South Vietnam.  Ut Bach Lan was among the most popular performers of  Southern Vietnamese folk opera known as cai luong.  She was once married to fellow performer, Thành Được, from 1961 until 1964.  Among her most popular in which she starred in included Nua Doi Huong Phan, Chua Tat Lua Long, Ben Doi Trang Cu, Thuyen Ra Cua Bien, Ao Trang Nang Mong Tinh, Nua Ban Tinh Ca and Nguoi Dep Thanh Bat Da.  In addition to the Vietnamese folk opera stage, Út Bạch Lan had acted in several well-received feature films prior to 1975 including Bóng Người Đi (1964) starring Thẩm Thúy Hằng and Báo Kiếm Rửa Hận Thù (1972) starring Ngọc Đan Thanh.

Due to her ex-husband's philandering Ut Bach Lan experienced financial woes having to support several of Thanh Duoc's children that had been born out of wedlock.  In 2014, Ut Bach Lan costarred with Cat Tuong and Hieu Hien in the television mini-series, Tro Ve 3, directed by Viet Trinh.  Toward the end of her life, she retired from the stage and took up residence at a temple in Ho Chi Minh City where she devoted most of her days helping the needy.

Ut Bach Lan passed away on November 4, 2016 after months of illness brought on by failing health and old age.  She was 81 years old.
