Thuy Vi

Thuy Vi (1960-    ) is a popular overseas Vietnamese singer.

She was born as Vũ Thị Thúy on May 8, 1960 in Saigon, South Vietnam.  In 1975, she and her family moved to the United States first resettling in Pennsylvania where they remained for 5 years.  After high school, she began working for the United States Postal Service.  In 1980, she relocated to Houston, Texas where she would continue with her day job for the post office and began singing weekly at L'amour Café, which was owned by her aunt.  Two years later, she turned professional performing regularly at a Vietnamese nightclub in Houston.

In 1985, Thuy Vi resettled in Orange County, California.  Shortly thereafter, she made her first professional audio recording with the song, Mây Lang Thang written by Nam Loc, featured on an album consisting of various artists for the Thanh Lan music label with Thuy Vi's photograph on the cover.  Through an introduction by singer Duy Quang, she began collaborating with another overseas Vietnamese music label, Giang Ngoc, which produced her first solo studio album, Heartflash Tonight (1987).  Thuy Vi also recorded for numerous other overseas Vietnamese music production labels such as Da Lan, Lang Van, Kim Ngan and Nguoi Dep Binh Duong.  Among her most popular recorded songs include Tháng Sáu Trời Mưa written by Hoàng Thanh Tâm Bé Dỗi Hờn written by Nguyễn Ngọc ThiệnNhư Đã Dấu Yêu and Đường Xa Ướt Mưa, both written by Đức Huy.


Due to her wholesome beauty and alluring stage presence, it was only natural that Thuy Vi would become one of the most popular overseas Vietnamese music video performers in the 1990s.  For Asia Entertainment, she appeared on their very first music video production, Tình Yêu Tuổi Trẻ (Young Love) (1990), in a duet, Chỉ  Giấc Mơ, with singer Nhu Mai.  This would be followed by appearances on Tình Yêu Tuổi Trẻ 2 (Young Love 2) (1991) and Tình Yêu Tuổi Trẻ 3 (Young Love 3) (1992) with solo performances of Blue Love written by Truc Ho and Rio, respectively.  Thuy Vi also appeared on the first two volumes of Asia Entertainment's live show video series, Đêm Sài Gòn 1: In Caesars Palace, Las Vegas (1992) and Asia 10th Anniversary (1993), with performances of Trưng Vương Khung Cửa Mùa Thu (Tell Laura I Love Her) written by Nam Loc and Bên Nhau Ngày Vui written by Quốc Dũng, respectively.  For Thuy Nga's Paris By Night Volumes 11 &12, she performed a cover of Madonna's True Blue in English and Vietnamese and a medley along with other singers Van Thu, Duy Hanh, Huynh Thi, Y Nhi, Ngoc Anh and Don Ho, respectively.  With her appearance on volume 2 of Van Son Entertainment's video series, Đại Chiến Ma Nữ Đa Tình (1995), Thuy Vi became the first performer to have appeared on all three of the major music video live shows produced in the overseas Vietnamese music industry.  Thuy Vi has also appeared on music videos for Lang Van, Diem Xua Productions, Nhat Ha, New York Night and the Hollywood Night series produced by Mây Productions, the most memorable as part of the emsemble, Ngũ Long Công Chúa, together with Lynda Trang Dai, Giang Ngoc, ZaZa Minh Thao and Ngoc Anh performing medleys of uptempo pop songs in Vietnamese and English.

In 1995, Thuy Vi was cast in the lead role of renowned Vietnamese-American director Charlie Nguyen's first film, Thời Hùng Vương 18.  In order to prepare for the role in this martial arts film, Thuy Vi trained with martial artist/actor Johnny Tri Nguyen for a total of 6 months prior to shooting.  Thời Hùng Vương 18 was a groundbreaking film for the overseas Vietnamese motion picture industry.  The film also starred legendary Cinema of Saigon actress Bang Chau and Vietnamese-American film actor Joseph Hieu.  

Thuy Vi formed her own music production label, Thuy Vi Musik, with the release of her studio album, Men Tình, in 1996.  She would release several more studio albums under her own music label in the coming years.  A popular headliner at live shows, Thuy Vi has toured all over the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia.  

Upon the invitation of the late musician/singer Viet Dzung, Thuy Vi began collaborating with SBTN Broadcast Television Network in the year 2000.  She is currently the host and writer of the popular television program, Thúy Vi và Suối Nguồn Âm Nhạc.  

Thuy Vi currently resides in Fountain Valley, California.  She is a mother of a grown son.  Aside from singing and acting, Thuy Vi is also known for being an avid tennis player.
