Chi Bao


Chi Bao (1973-    ) is a famous Vietnamese actor of television and film.

Pham Gia Chi Bao was born on January 23, 1973 in Vung Tau, South Vietnam.  During the 11th grade, he relocated to Ho Chi Minh City where he would finish out his last year of high school.  In 1991, Chi Bao enrolled at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology as a computer engineering major.  In 1994, he enrolled in an acting course that was taught near Tan Son Nhat International Airport and became acquainted with comedic stage actor Huu Nghia.  After the drama course ended, he was offered a supporting role in a televised dramatic play, Mot Thoi De Nho.  Impressed with his natural acting abilities, Huu Nghia immediately offered him a part in another televised dramatic play, Con Song Du, where he portrayed an AIDS victim.  Blessed with good looks and charm, Chi Bao proved that he was a natural at acting.  With each role offered to him, he would excel leaving a lasting impression with the audience.  Unexpectedly, a major acting career would be underway for Chi Bao.

In 1996, he was approached by director Tran Van Sau who offered him the lead role in the television mini-series, Huong Doi, about drug awareness.  The mini-series went on to win the Huy Chuong Vang Award, Vietnam's equivalence of an Emmy, for Best Television Movie or Mini-Series of the Year.  Chi Bao would then star in a string of well-received movies and mini-series made for Vietnamese television such as Nguoi Dep Tay Do (1996) starring Viet Trinh, Hong Anh, Tu Trinh, Kim Xuan, the late actors Le Cong Tuan Anh and Don Duong, Nhung Dua Con Thanh Pho (1998), Dong Tien Xuong Mau (1999) with Lam Toi and Truong Ngoc Anh, Giao Thoi (2000), Ben Song Trang (2001), Nguoi Dan Ba Yeu Duoi (2002) starring Tran Kim Ngan and Truong Minh Quoc Thai, Luc Van Tien (2004) with Truong Ngoc Anh, Phuoc Sang and Than Thuy Ha, the long running and outrageously successful Co Gai Xau Xi (2007-2009), which was the Vietnamese version of Ugly Betty starring Ngoc Hiep, Phi Thanh Van, Lan Phuong, Binh Minh and Minh Thuan, Dong Song Huynh De (2009) starring opposite Xuan Lan, Anh Em Nha Bac Si (2010) with Minh Luan and Bao Quoc, Nhiet Oan (2011) with Ly Hung and Nhung Ngon Nen Trong Dem 2 (2016) starring Mai Thu Huyen.

In 2000, Chi Bao starred in his first feature film, Mat Tran Khong Tieng Sung.  Among his other popular featured films include Vu Khuc Con Co (2001), 301 (2002), Khi Dan Ong Co Bau (When Men Get Pregnant) (2005) with an all-star cast including Truong Ngoc Anh, Nguyen Phi Hung, Hong Nga, Ngoc Giau, Hong Van, Phuong Thanh and Nguyen Chanh Tin, De Muon (Giving Hired Birth) (2005) costarring Ha Kieu Anh and Thuy Nga, Truong Son Ngay Ay (2006) with Le Phuong Mai and Cao Minh Dat, Vo Lam Truyen Ky (2007) starring Dan Truong, Hoai Linh, Thanh Thao, Vu Thu Phuong and Cat Phuong, Scandal 2:  Hao Quang Tro Lai (2014) with Than Thuy Ha and Huong Ga (2014) starring Truong Ngoc Anh, Kim Ly, Nhu Quynh and Chi Pu.

Chi Bao was also the author and editor-in-chief of DanOng.com, a now defunct website that ran for several years and focused on men's issues.
