Nam Cuong (1985- ) is a popular Vietnamese singer and actor.
Born as Nguyễn Nam Cường on September 16, 1985 in Da Nang, Central Vietnam, Nam Cuong had developed a love for singing at a very early age. His family neither encouraged nor supported his childhood interests in music. Therefore, Nam Cuong did not receive any formal music training as a child and was a self-taught vocalist. During his sophomore year in Phan Chau Trinh High School in Da Nang, he entered and won a school sponsored talent contest for his singing talents. He was selected by his school for the next two consecutive years to enter the Da Nang Citywide Students Association Annual Talent Contest, for which he would win the coveted first prize Huy Chuong Vang Award for the vocals competition in his senior year. Right after his high school graduation, he entered the televised Yo! Cùng Ước Mơ Xanh talent show sponsored by YoMost Food and Beverage Company and VTV3 Television Network. Impressing the judges immensely with his live renditions of songs such as Tạm Biệt and Tình khúc Vàng, Nam Cuong ended up in a four-way tie for first place along with fellow contestants Toc Tien, Minh Thu and Viet Thanh. That same year, the four winners of Yo! Cùng Ước Mơ Xanh (2003) formed the short-lived Yoband!, a pop music group which played for local gigs around Da Nang and made numerous television appearances on the VTV3 Network in hopes of widening their exposure to the general public. Nam Cuong would manage to win over television viewer audiences with his performances of songs such as Tình Ca written by Quoc Bao and Phút Yêu Đầu written by Bao Lu, as part of Yoband!. Soon after, the four original members of Yoband! would go their separate ways in order to concentrate on solo careers.
After the dismantling of Yoband!, Nam Cuong made the decision to relocate to Ho Chi Minh City. He enrolled at Sân Khấu Điện Ảnh Conservatory to study acting. Among his television and film acting credits have included Tham Vọng (2009) starring Ngan Khanh and Cao Minh Dat, Những Thiên Thần Áo Trắng (2010) starring Midu, Lan Phuong, Miu Le, Nha Phuong and Phi Thanh Van, Lòng Dạ Đàn Bà (2011) starring actress Ngoc Lan, Van Trang and Duong Cam Lynh, Trúng Số Tình (2013) starring Chi Tai and Phuong Thanh, Lạc Giới (2014) starring Mai Thu Huyen and Huynh Anh and Con Nhà Giàu (2015) starring actress Ngoc Lan and Quoc Truong.
Since 2008, Nam Cuong has resumed his singing career recording and releasing a series of well-received solo studio albums including Đồng Thoại (2008), Bay Giữa Ngân Hà (2009), Phải Là Anh (2010), Lời Hứa (2011), Tìm Trong Kỷ Niệm (2011) and Sợ (2012). In 2010, he along with Vietnamese pop singer Ho Quynh Huong were invited to perform as featured special guests alongside Vietnamese-Japanese pop singer Phongchi at the annual Vietnam Festival held at Yoyogi Park in the Shibuya district of Tokyo, Japan. He is signed with Music Box Entertainment, a management company founded and headed by singer Thanh Thao.
