Y Lan (1957- ) is a famous overseas Vietnamese singer. Born in Saigon to legendary Vietnamese singer, Thai Thanh, and legendary film actor, Le Quynh, Y Lan is the eldest of five children. She along with younger sister, Quynh Huong, would eventually follow their mother's footsteps in career paths. However, while growing up, Y Lan was hesitant to pursue a career in singing and instead focused primarily on her studies and becoming a businesswoman. While in Vietnam, Y Lan had owned a cafe that hosted other artists who remained in Vietnam after 1975. In 1980, Y Lan while pregnant with her second child fled from Vietnam along with her then husband and one year old daughter from Vietnam by boat. After a year spent living at a refugee camp, Y Lan and her family resettled in the United States, first in Houston, Texas and then Southern California. After having five kids, Y Lan finally began singing professionally here in the United States in 1989 when she was approached by Thai Xuan, the owner of Diem Xua Productions. Almost instantaneously, Y Lan became a Vietnamese singing phenomenon with such recordings of songs like Quynh Huong, Ao Dai Viet Nam and Vet Sau. Audiences immediately took notice of her beauty, her elegance that coincided with her Northern Vietnamese etiquette and her unique singing voice which was clearly distinct from yet reminiscent of her legendary mother. This would lead Y Lan to numerous appearances on Thuy Nga Paris and Asia Productions along with live performances for Vietnamese audiences worldwide.
During the early 1990s, Y Lan had performed exclusively for Ritz Nightclub in Anaheim. Her stage presence and style of dress had helped make her one of the highest paid performers at live shows among Vietnamese singers.
A breast cancer survivor, Y Lan is a mother to six children. Five out of her six children had come from her first marriage which had lasted 16 years. Y Lan's youngest child was fathered by Tuan Cuong, actor / singer and son of legendary film actress, Kieu Chinh. Now happily remarried to an engineer named Tuan, Y Lan has also become a grandmother. In a surprising twist of fate, in 2007 Y Lan's eldest daughter, singer Mai Linh, and and the son of her current husband tied the knot. The young couple also added a daughter to their family unit that same year, making both Y Lan and her current husband, Tuan, proud grandparents. In her professional life, Y Lan still continues to perform for Vietnamese audiences all over the world and is the owner of her own music production company, Y Lan Productions.
