Gia Huy

Gia Huy (1975-    ) is a popular overseas Vietnamese singer who had first risen to prominence back in the 1990s as a recording artist signed with Asia Entertainment.

Born on August 22, 1975, he was given the name, Đặng Quốc Hùng, at birth.  After spending the first 16 years of his life in Vietnam, in 1991 he resettled in Montréal, Canada with his family.  After turning 18, Gia Huy began singing professionally with the Montréal-based Phạm Mạnh Cường band.  From his very first live performance at the Chateau du Parc cabaret, Gia Huy had managed to leave a lasting impression with audience members who were mesmerized by his flawless covers of such songs like Máu Nhuộm Bãi Thượng Hải, Mười Năm Tình Cũ and Lambada.  In a short period of time, Gia Huy would make a name for himself within the Vietnamese community of Montréal performing regularly at various Vietnamese cabarets such as Bistro Doré, Miss Saigon and Đêm Sai Gòn.  However, he had set his goals further than just being a well-known local singer within the Vietnamese community of Montréal.

In 1994, Gia Huy was introduced to the owners of Asia Entertainment by mutual acquaintances.  After listening to a demo recording by Gia Huy, both Thy Vân and Trúc Hồ, the CEO and musical director of Asia Entertainment, respectively, were so impressed with his perfect pitch and vocal style that they immediately signed him with the label as an exclusive artist.  This would prompt his decision to relocate to Southern California.  In 1995, Gia Huy made his debut appearance on volume 8 of the popular live show music video series produced by Asia Entertainment, Đêm Nhạc Hội, as part of a quartet along with fellow singers Lâm Nhật Tiến, Johnny Dũng and Nhật Quân in a cover of The Drifters classic, Under the Boardwalk, for the opening act and a solo performance of a song written by Trúc Hồ, Nhịp Điệu Của Tình Yêu.  For the next decade, Gia Huy would record a series of solo studio albums, as well as continue to make appearances on video for Asia Entertainment.  Among his most well-received solo studio albums released by Asia Entertainment include Anh Vẫn Biết (1997), Tình Yêu Mắt Nai (1998), Hôn Môi Xa (2001) and Thiên Đàng Đánh Mất (2002).  Among his most popular songs recorded for the Asia Entertainment label include Triệu Đóa Hoa HồngKỳ Diệu (written by Nguyên Sa and composed by Anh Bằng), Một Chút Quà Cho Quê Hương (written and composed by Việt Dzũng), Tuổi 13 (written by Nguyên Sa and composed by Ngô Thụy Miên) and Thư Xuân Hải Ngoại (written and composed by Trầm Tử Thiêng).  Gia Huy had also recorded many duets with various other artists while under the Asia Entertainment label including Dạ Nhật Yến, Anh Khoa, Thiên Kim, Diễm Liên, Thanh Trúc and Như Quỳnh.

Gia Huy has since formed his own production label, Gia Huy Music, and has released several more solo studio albums.  In 2005, he signed with Rạng Đông Entertainment, which is based in Vietnam, as an exclusive artist.  After appearing on volume 71 of the popular live show music video series produced by Asia Entertainment which had anti-communist implications, Gia Huy along with Thanh Tuyền, Tuấn Vũ, Quang Minh, Hồng Đào and Mạnh Đình have been banned from issuance of a working holiday visa required for overseas performance artists wishing to work in Vietnam.  Nevertheless, Gia Huy continues to perform for overseas Vietnamese audiences worldwide.  He currently resides in Garden Grove, California.
