Phạm Huỳnh Đông was born on November 5, 1983 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Despite being the son of the vice-president of the Saigon Opera Theater, which housed many popular Vietnamese plays, he had not been raised with any encouragement to one day enter the field of acting. His initial intentions after high school was to study economics at the University of Ho Chi Minh City. Unfortunately, his application was rejected due to an insufficient grade point average. Huỳnh Đông then went with his dreams and applied at Trường Cao Đẳng Sân Khấu - Điện Ảnh (National Academy of Theatrical and Film Arts) only to be turned down again. For the next several years, he struggled in pursuance of his dream to become an actor playing bit parts and working as an understudy. Finally, in 2006 Huỳnh Đông landed a significant role in the television mini-series, Hàn Mặc Tử. The following year, he starred in what would become known as his signature breakthrough role as Quân in the television mini-series, Gọi Giấc Mơ Về, with Công Ninh and Hoài An. In 2010, he won the Cánh Diều Vàng Award (Golden Kite Award) for Best Actor in a Television Movie or Series for his portrayal of Huỳnh Văn Nghệ in Vó Ngựa Trời Nam. Among his other popular television movies and series include Một Ngày Không Có Em (2008) with Trương Quỳnh Anh and Kinh Quốc, Những Đóa Hoa Tình Yêu (2010) with Việt Trinh, Hoa Vàng Nơi Ấy (2010), Trái Đắng (2010) with Chí Tài and Maya, Nụ Hôn Đầu Xuân (2011) with Hoài Linh and Đan Trường, Đất Mặn (2012), Duyên Nợ Miền Tây (2012), Hương Bưởi (2012) with Lê Bê La and Nhan Phúc Vinh, Người Cộng Sự (2013) with Lan Phương, Hai Người Cha (2013) with Ngọc Lan, Hữu Nghĩa and Việt Hương, Chân Tình (2013) with Cát Tường, Cha Rơi (2014) with Thái Hòa, Ảo Vọng (2014) with Dương Cẩm Lynh, Truy Tìm Dấu Vết (2016) with Minh Hằng, Hoa Cúc Trắng (2016) with Thân Thúy Hà and Nhân Tình Lạc Lối (2016) with Ninh Dương Lan Ngọc and Chi Bảo.
In 2012, Huỳnh Đông starred in his first feature film, Thiên Mệnh Anh Hùng (Blood Letter). Directed by Victor Vũ, the film costarred Midu, Vân Trang, Khương Ngọc, Maya and the late Minh Thuận. The film went onto win 5 Cánh Diều Vàng Awards for that year including Best Feature Film, Best Director and Best Actor in a Feature Film for Huỳnh Đông. In 2014, he had a supporting role in the film, Cô Dâu Đại Chiến 2, which also starred Bình Minh, Lan Phương, Vân Trang, Lê Khánh and Maya. His latest feature films include Yêu (2016) with Chi Pu and Quang Sự and Cao Thủ Ẩn Danh (2016) with Ốc Thanh Vân, Hiếu Hiền and Bảo Liêm.
